T. R. Miller Mill Company, Inc.
T. R. Miller Mill Company, Inc. is one of the most unique, privately held, forest products companies in business today. It is not uncommon to find companies that contain various divisions and operations under a single name. T. R. Miller, however, not only has its offerings under one name, but all in one location. From the planting of a tree to the delivery of the finished product, T. R. Miller has total control of every step in the process. The first sawmill in this area was built in 1848 along Cedar Creek near Brewton, Alabama. Little is known of the original mill except that it was a small water-driven mill, but the choice of location still commands admiration. Not only did Cedar Creek power the mill, it also transported logs from the vast virgin forest along its upper reaches and floated the sawn timbers to Pensacola, Florida for export. With a change of ownership in 1872, this mill was destined to become the T. R. Miller Mill Company, Inc. With expanding lumber markets, it was decided the mill should be moved to the town of Brewton where it was converted to a steam-powered operation in 1892. Its location on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad enabled the company to ship its products by rail as well as by water. It was recognized by Mr. T. R. Miller that if the company was to survive and grow, it could not follow the usual cutting practices but must adopt a more conservative program. This selective cutting became the pattern which allowed the company to continue to develop its manufacturing operations. By 1904 the company began building its first stretch of railroad for logging operations. More than sixty miles of track was maintained for this purpose for over 30 years. As the company expanded, a sash-door and window plant was established in 1903. A veneer plant to utilize bottomland hardwoods was built in 1910, followed three years later by a wirebound box factory, one of the first in the country. In 1927 the company constructed a wood-preserving plant to produce utility poles, piling, and fence posts. Total utilization of all timber products grown in the T. R. Miller forest has always been one of the company's goals. Today, a market for virtually every part of the tree has been established. When it comes to dependable forest products, T. R. Miller is the natural choice.
